Mrs Footer (Year 1 Leader) and Teachers Mr Bayford, Ms Schruyers and Mrs Wallace, supported by Teaching Assistant Mrs Sarah Douglas and Mrs Martin, welcome you to Year One.
In Year One we have worked hard on making the transition from Reception as easy for the children as we can. They continue to access their learning through a multi-sensory approach following the objectives from the new National Curriculum.
Throughout the day, new ideas and concepts are introduced during regular inputs. The children are then challenged and supported through small group work and independent activities that are carefully planned to ensure that individual learning is moved on.
Children's progress is always important to us and
when it is necessary children are given some individual or very small
group work to either reinforce their learning or to widen the breadth
of their understanding.
Children are encouraged to take control of their
own learning by teachers sharing next steps and targets with them.
They are also given opportunities to work independently on these and
to show their progress. The classroom environment is set up with
interesting displays which both inform and celebrate children's
achievements complete with open questions, allowing the children to
interact and extend understanding.
Over the year, we will enjoy learning together with topics linked to the children's interests and include work on events that are happening in the World around them.
The children will bring home a reading book which reflects the child's ability. We ask parents/carers to record any reading that their child has done in the yellow reading log. The Year 1 spelling list is shared with parents/carers so that they can be practised at home to reinforce the spellings taught at school. We also provide a choice of topic and maths homework which the children can complete and return to school fortnightly.
