Welcome to Year 5 at Billingshurst Primary School!
The staff in Year 5 are: Mr Collinson in Maldives Class (Year Leader), Mrs Diserens in Nepal Class and Mr Buckler in Cambodia Class. We are supported by our fantastic Teaching Assistant Mrs Bradley.
A unique feature of Year 5 is that each pupil will take part in our Forest School Project, where they will take part in outdoor adventurous activities such as den building and making fires. This provides a fantastic opportunity to learn in a different way.
We are excited about the New Curriculum and have some wonderful topics throughout Year 5. We start our year with a topic called 'Our Amazing Planet', which has a strong focus on volcanoes. One of the most exciting parts of this topic is creating our own 3D volcanoes and making then erupt - messy but fun! We will also be doing a topic called 'Space Explorers', which is linked to the exciting mission of Tim Peake going to the International Space Station. We also have an opportunity to visit the Planetarium in Chichester, to study the wonder of the night sky and planets.
In the Spring term, we will continue our 'Space Explorers' topic. We then begin studying the history of the fascinating ancient civilisation of Mesopotamia.
During the Summer term, we study the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, which will include a trip to investigate the skills that Viking people used.
We encourage participation in homework by providing interesting and engaging challenges for the pupils to complete and bring to school, with merits given for their effort. We also encourage reading by providing Home School reading books for children to record their reading achievements. We visit the Library weekly and have extensive class libraries for the children to use.
The Year 5 teachers are happy to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have, and are available every day after school in the playground, or please make an appointment if required.
The Year 5 team are excited about the year ahead and look forward to working with you and your children to make it an enjoyable and memorable year.
